Soundscapes

During the grade 1 unit of inquiry we have been exploring how indigenous people express themselves through inquiring into indigenous music and its relationship to culture, feelings and beliefs. When analysing some forms of indigenous Australian music we discovered that within many Aboriginal groups they use onomatopoeia (words that sound like sounds) to name their animals. This use of onomatopoeia is then transferred into didgeridoo playing to create vocalisations and tell stories through songs. After listening to some field recordings of the Tanami Desert at night we used instruments within the class room to compose a piece of music replicate some of sounds that we heard such as using recorders and whistles to recreate bird calls and shakers to reproduce the sounds of insects.
